Mr Hadley Wickham has made the authentication for this much easier…

library(httr)
google <- oauth_endpoint(NULL, "auth", "token", base_url = auth_url)
myapp <- oauth_app("google", client_id, secret=client_secret)
# this will open a browser window and ask permission for access
cred <- oauth2.0_token(google, myapp, scope = scope)

Then you can use the curl script like in my last blog post.
