Drawing hyperbolic polyhedra

A. A. Ungar has developed the concept of gyrovector space. His theory provides a (gyro)vector approach to hyperbolic geometry.

Ungar deeply studied three examples of gyrovector spaces; they correspond to three models of hyperbolic geometry: the Beltrami model, the Poincaré ball model, and the hyperboloid model.

In this blog post, I will consider the gyrovector approach to the hyperboloid model. We will see how it makes easy to draw some hyperbolic polyhedra.

Gyrovector space

A point is an element of \(\mathbb{R}^n\). Throughout, \(s\) is a fixed positive number.

Shortly speaking, \(\mathbb{R}^n\) is a gyrovector space when it is equipped with a gyroaddition and a scalar gyromultiplication.

Gyroaddition

In order to define the gyroaddition of two points, we introduce the beta factor of a point \(A\), defined by \[ \beta_A = \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{1 + \dfrac{{\Vert A \Vert}^2}{s^2}}}. \]

The gyroaddition of two points \(A\) and \(B\) is then defined by \[ A \oplus B = \left(1 + \frac{\beta_A}{1+\beta_A}\frac{A\cdot B}{s^2} + \frac{1-\beta_B}{\beta_B} \right) A + B. \] Later, we will resort to the (non-obvious) property \[ (\star)\qquad -A \oplus (A \oplus B) = B. \]

Scalar gyromultiplication

For \(r \in \mathbb{R}\), the scalar gyromultiplication of a point \(A\) by \(r\) is defined by
\[ r \otimes A = \frac{s}{\Vert A \Vert} \sinh\left(r \sinh^{-1}\left(\frac{\Vert A \Vert}{s}\right)\right) A. \]

It is easy to see that \(0 \otimes A = \mathbf{0}\) and \(1 \otimes A = A\).

Gyroline, gyrosegment and gyromidpoint

In order to define a gyroline and the gyrosegment joining two points, we introduce the notation \[ \overset{\oplus\longrightarrow}{AB} = (-A) \oplus B. \]

The gyroline passing through \(A\) and \(B\) is the set of all points having form \[ A \oplus \Bigl(t \otimes \overset{\oplus\longrightarrow}{AB}\Bigr) \] for some \(t \in \mathbb{R}\).

Observe that the point \(A \oplus \Bigl(t \otimes \overset{\oplus\longrightarrow}{AB}\Bigr)\) equals \(A\) when \(t=0\) (easy) and equals \(B\) when \(t=1\) (that stems from property \((\star)\)).

The gyrosegment that joins \(A\) and \(B\) is the set of such points for \(t \in [0,1]\): \[ \left\{ A \oplus \Bigl(t \otimes \overset{\oplus\longrightarrow}{AB}\Bigr) \Bigm| 0 \leq t \leq 1\right\}. \]

The gyromidpoint of \(A\) and \(B\) is the point of the gyrosegment joining \(A\) and \(B\) corresponding to \(t = \frac12\): \[ A \oplus \left(\frac{1}{2} \otimes \overset{\oplus\longrightarrow}{AB}\right). \]

Let’s plot a two-dimensional gyrosegment.

This is a part of a hyperbola whose asymptotes meet at the origin.

Hyperbolic triangle

Thanks to the gyrosegments, we can easily plot the edges of a hyperbolic triangle.

Icosahedron

An icosahedron is made of twenty triangular faces. So we have everything needed to plot an icosahedron.

Triangular orthobicopula

To plot the icosahedron, we had at our disposal its vertices, its edges, and its faces, which are triangular.

Now consider the triangular orthobicopula. We only have the coordinates of its vertices, and not all its faces are triangular. So, how to plot it?

Since this is a convex polyhedron, we can use the cxhull package to get its edges and its faces. We use the option triangulate = TRUE to get a triangulation of the faces.

I’ve realized that the addNormals function of the rgl package is not appropriate when there are duplicated vertices in the mesh (it adds different normals to the duplicated vertices). And there are (a lot of) duplicated vertices in the mesh created by the gyrosubdiv function.

To remove the duplicated vertices, one can use the vcgClean function of the Rvcg package (which also adds the normals). Observe the difference:

idx <- faces[1,]
A <- vertices[idx[1],]
B <- vertices[idx[2],]
C <- vertices[idx[3],]
mesh <- gyrosubdiv(A, B, C, s = s, depth = 4)
view3d(30, 30, zoom = 0.9)
shade3d(mesh, color = "navy")

mesh <- Rvcg::vcgClean(mesh, sel = c(0,7), silent = TRUE)
view3d(30, 30, zoom = 0.9)
shade3d(mesh, color = "navy")

So a better gyrosubdiv function is:

  Rvcg::vcgClean(mesh, sel = c(0,7), silent = TRUE)
}
