Now that the final submissions are in for the Applications of R in Business contest, it's time to announce the judging panel who will select the winners for $20,000 in cash prizes from Revolution Analytics. They are:
- Edd Dumbill, technologist and writer for O'Reilly Media
- David Menninger, VP & Research Director at Ventana Research
- Steve Miller, technology writer and co-founder of OpenBI LLC
- David White, Senior Research Analyst at Aberdeen Group
- Hadley Wickham, R package author and professor at Rice University
We're excited to have such a diverse and experienced panel to review the finalists and rate their submissions on the on applicability to business, innovation and persuasiveness. And here's what some of the judges have to say about the competion:
Edd Dumbill: “There's no better way to see a technology's strengths than to look at its applications. R attracts some incredibly creative minds, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it's put to use in business. I can't say enough about how important it is that business gets agile and powerful tools for working with data.”
David Menninger: “I’m looking forward to learning more about organization’s innovative applications of R in the marketplace and comparing what they are doing with what we are seeing in our ongoing predictive analytics benchmark research. Our business analytics research showed that only 13% of organizations were using predictive analytics yet 37% found them to be important. Clearly there is an opportunity for organizations to do more.”
David White: “At Aberdeen, we see growing interest in predictive analytics. Open source software like R lowers the barriers to adoption and that has the potential to make a whole new range of business applications viable. I'm excited to be able to get an early look at emerging application areas.”
